Sponsor a Fire Truck
Assist the Midland Fire Department with PFAS Remediation
PBPA is calling on our membership to support an important initiative that directly benefits our community, first responders, and the Permian Basin energy industry.
We were proud to facilitate the first donation from Ovintiv to the Midland Fire Department to assist with the remediation and disposal of Class B firefighting foam containing PFAS, commonly known as "forever chemicals."
The Midland Fire Department currently has approximately 20 fire engines carrying PFAS-containing foam. While this foam has long been used to combat fuel and industrial fires, growing environmental concerns have led to a nationwide transition away from PFAS products. Midland International Air & Space Port was among the first airports in Texas to replace its PFAS foam in response to recent FAA requirements, and MFD is now working to do the same.
The challenge is cost.
The proper disposal of the foam and cleaning of each fire engine is estimated to cost approximately $25,000 per truck.
Recent events have highlighted the importance of this effort. During a tank battery fire in Midland, PFAS foam was utilized to help extinguish the fire. While effective in emergency situations, the use of PFAS foam can create significant environmental remediation obligations and cleanup costs after the incident is over. Investing in the proactive replacement of this foam today can help reduce future liabilities and environmental impacts for our community.
That's why we're inviting PBPA members and other oil and gas businesses to "Sponsor a Fire Truck".
For $25,000, a company can fund the cleaning and transition of one Midland Fire Department fire engine. Companies may also contribute at any level, and multiple organizations can partner together to sponsor a truck.
This is a unique opportunity to support the firefighters who protect our communities and industry every day while helping advance a proactive environmental solution.
